Joining beauty pageants has become the perfect training ground for most beauty queens who are determined to bring out the best in themselves. This is the same belief shared by the three lovely ladies who will represent the Tagaytay casino branch in the Miss Casino Filipino 2014 grand finals night.

The three grand finalists – Emylyn Perez, Berna Gail Penales and Camille Laylay – all agree that joining beauty pageants greatly helped them in boosting their self-esteem.

Perez, a Tourism graduate who now works as a freelance model said that participating in different beauty contests helped her realize her strengths and weaknesses. “I discovered my limitations. Nevertheless, I was able to find ways on how I can turn my weaknesses into strengths. I also became more confident,” she cited.

Perez was named Best in Talent and Best in Long Gown during the Tagaytay leg of the search for Miss Casino Filipino 2014.

According to Perez, she idolizes Filipina beauty queens whose grace, poise and wit have brought honor to the country. “They have shown to the world that we are beautiful people with an amazing culture. I hope to be able to achieve what they have done for the Philippines,” she added.

Meanwhile, 18 year-old Berna Gail Penales is grateful to PAGCOR for conducting the Miss Casino Filipino pageant. “This contest is giving us not only the opportunity to be recognized but more importantly the chance to pursue an advocacy close to our hearts,” she explained.

Penales added that she has been joining beauty contests to gain confidence. “Napaka-hirap i-boost ang confidence pero dahil sa pagsali sa pageants, nagkaroon ako ng tiwala sa sarili. The prizes I won in these contests also helped finance my education, she said.

On the other hand, Camille Laylay – an IT graduate – said that Miss Casino Filipino helped develop her interpersonal skills. “Mahahasa dito kung paano ka makisama sa iba at kung paano mo dalhin ang sarili mo,” she said.

What sets Miss Casino Filipino apart from the other pageants is that it requires its participants to choose a charitable undertaking which they wish to pursue once they are crowned Miss Casino Filipino. The winner can give to her chosen charitable institution a P200,000 cash donation from PAGCOR.

If she wins the crown, Perez said she intends to support re-greening initiatives by planting more trees together with the National Service Training Program (NSTP) students from her alma mater, the Systems Plus College Foundation in Pampanga.

Penales, on the one hand, aims to reach out to organizations that provide free services to orphans, elderly and people with disabilities. She wants to help the Golden Acres and Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. if she wins the Miss Casino Filipino title.

Laylay, meanwhile, will choose an institution that cares after the needy and the less fortunate. “We can do an act of kindness by doing even the simplest things,” she said.

Former beauty queen Sonia Santiago Mendoza, one of the judges during the Tagaytay regional screening, said all the candidates showed their best during the competition. “They are very lovely and it is very evident that they all came here prepared to win. A beauty queen should have beauty, brains and a good heart and they all displayed these qualities,” she said.

Mendoza also thanked PAGCOR and Casino Filipino for giving young and talented Filipinas a chance to pursue their dream of becoming beauty queens. “All they need is a break and the Miss Casino Filipino beauty pageant is giving them that chance,” she added.
